Alex Outhred knows poker like it was his job. In fact, it is his job! As an associate producer who has worked for the past three seasons with the WORLD POKER TOUR®, Outhred scrutinizes players’ every card, bet, critical decision and glance across the table. It is he who knows and pinpoints the moves in tournament play that result in catastrophic defeat or million-dollar wins. As such, Outhred has been dubbed “The Insider” for the unmatched experience that will be of endless value to WPT BOOT CAMP™ students seeking a path to the Final Table.
The average WPT Final Table sees over 100 hands played before a winner is determined. An average of 450 sets of hole cards are usually filmed during this last round, but only 25 percent of these hands make it to broadcast. Outhred views, records and analyzes each hand, meaning “The Insider” has a look into expert tournament play that is unprecedented in the poker world.
It is well known that those who observe and study the techniques and strategies of others are often the best teachers. When the subject is tournament level Texas Hold’Em Poker, no one has witnessed more than Outhred. A math whiz that majored in psychology and philosophy at the University of Michigan, it would be difficult to educate a future poker expert in a better fashion. Courses in game theory and statistics fueled his love for poker.
The vast amount of knowledge Outhred owns has been called upon previously to train HOLLYWOOD HOME GAME celebrities such as Mekhi Phifer, William Shatner, Michelle Clunie, David Sutcliffe, Bob Eubanks, Chuck Woolery, and Billy Burke. But Outhred’s appreciation of the game transcends televised poker. He has also designed and managed tournaments featuring top amateurs, Los Angeles professional players, and occasionally top pros and celebrities such as Phil Laak and Jeremy Sisto.
While new to pro poker, Outhred is hardly inexperienced. This former model with the Ford agency began learning the game as he and friends played for milk money and lunchroom snacks in a New York City junior high school. Skills were further honed during informal games in high school and college. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Outhred discovered the private poker gatherings in which Hollywood actors and music industry people play. But the real poker schooling came when Outhred began working with WORLD POKER TOUR announcers Mike Sexton and Vincent Van Patten. Interacting day in and day out with these poker gurus opened his eyes to how psychology and math meld together to create a perfect technique that produces results. Recently, Outhred has been applying what he knows at Southern California poker tournaments, where he finishes in the money over 50 percent of the time.
For the WPT BOOT CAMP, Outhred will not only help enrollees perfect poker techniques, but he will also be working with WPT commentators Mike Sexton and Vincent Van Patten to hand select dynamic, distinguished, top-notch pro players to act as trainers during Boot Camp sessions.
